It's Not Me, It's Not My Family - Lyric Day

A great song with a serious undertone to it this week, Zombie from The Cranberries:

I've always loved this song as it's got a great riff and is a bit grungier than most of The Cranberries' other stuff. It's also a very sad song though, there are clear references throughout the song to the the troubles in Northern Ireland "It's the same old theme since 1916". The song as a whole is about the killing of two children in an IRA bombing in Warrington in 1993. It's clear that the song is referencing the fact that civilians get caught up in this terrible and long war (ending in 1998).

Anyway, here's the lyrics for you:

"Another head hangs lowly,
Child is slowly taken.
And the violence caused such silence,
Who are we mistaken?

But you see, it's not me, it's not my family.
In your head, in your head they are fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are crying...

In your head, in your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie,
Hey, hey, hey. What's in your head,
In your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie?
Hey, hey, hey, hey, oh, dou, dou, dou, dou, dou...

Another mother's breakin',
Heart is taking over.
When the vi'lence causes silence,
We must be mistaken.

It's the same old theme since nineteen-sixteen.
In your head, in your head they're still fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are dying...

In your head, in your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie,
Hey, hey, hey. What's in your head,
In your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie?
Hey, hey, hey, hey, oh, oh, oh,
Oh, oh, oh, oh, hey, oh, ya, ya-a..."

Thank you and goodnight

  1. Cracking tune - but I don't think the war ended in 1998, still going on today sadly.

  2. lyrics are like that...deeper than we first imagine....ever consider the words to old standards from the '30's and 40's?..... 'You Made Me Love You....I didn't wanna do it..I didn't wanna do it'............What's that all about?......But I've said it before and I'll say it again...I think the body of work put out there be Eric Burdon (spelled right?) and The Animals is among THE BEST....'I'm just a soul whose intentions are good.... Please, Lord, don't let me be misunderstood'... and .... 'We gotta get out of this place....If it's the last thing we ever do....We gotta get out of this place....Girl, there's a better life for me and you'..........Why don't somebody rediscover them, even if Eric looks like a big fat, but still sharp, Florida grandpop.... heard him on a U.S. P.B.S. (public tv network, but just barely. very much like what we call cable or pay tv over here) nostalgia special and the guy still has the chops.....Would make a good 'vampire mac daddy' in my blog-opera too...maybe (sigh) in the film................How 'bout highlighting some lyrics from the legitimate musical stage?
